Our family has been closely interwoven with viticulture and agriculture for centuries. Since the first documented mention of agricultural land ownership in 1655, an exceptionally high density of wine growers and wine merchants has developed in almost all lines of the Steinschaden family. The foundation stone for today’s business was laid in the 1950s by our grandfather Godfried Steinschaden. With foresight, courage and pioneering spirit, he led the family business into a new era. At an early stage, for example, he opted for high culture – the grapevine cultivation system that was to revolutionise working methods, quality and yield in viticulture. The first trial plantings took place in 1950 – ten years later, the entire vineyard area had been converted to the modern cultivation system.

In the mid-1960s, Godfried Steinschaden built the Weinschlössl and also began to break new ground in distribution: he switched from selling cask wine to the bottle trade. Soon, in addition to the Austrian provinces, the neighbouring countries were also supplied. From the 1990s onwards, the winery was in the hands of Godfried’s sons: our fathers Anton and Godfried Steinschaden together ensured that the business remained firmly in family hands – from the cultivation of the vineyards to the cellar management to the support of customers in gastronomy and trade. The conscious balance of technical innovation and traditional knowledge enabled constant further development and healthy growth.

WITH HEART AND SOUL
FOR THE WINE

We are now the third generation to run the winery. The ideological as well as the tangible values have remained: the extensive cellars of our wine castle still vault protectively over the spectacular wine press dating from 1564 as well as over one of the largest fillable wooden barrels in the German-speaking region – with a capacity of more than 40 hectolitres and an empty weight of ten tonnes, this unique barrel is a gigantic monument to traditional viticulture.

DIE WEINE

Our signature is classic and unobtrusive. We value authenticity and elegance. Out of conviction, we strive to produce varietal-typical and authentic wines in which all the flavours of the grape can be experienced. We cultivate two hundred different vineyards. This diversity is reflected in a wide range of wines.
