The leisurely meandering Kamp river gives its name to the wine-growing region of Kamptal, on the southern edge of which our winery is located. On its journey from the northern Waldviertel towards the Danube, the Kamp brings fertility and a perfect wine-growing climate to this tranquil region, where wine grows on a remarkable 3,582 hectares. This makes the Kamptal one of the largest wine-growing regions in the country.

The Climate

THE CLIMATE

Its scenic diversity is what makes the Kamptal so unique and attractive. Picturesquely scattered wine villages tell stories. Sunny slopes nestle up against dense forests until the valley finally reveals views of exposed plains. This special topography allows for an exciting interplay of freshness and warmth: the night brings cool air from the Waldviertel, the day high temperatures from the Pannonian basin. The resulting dynamic is reflected in the aromatic and lively wines typical of the region.

THE SOILS

The soils of the Kamptal are as diverse as its landscape. Primary rock, loess, loam and Danube gravel with their individual characteristics influence the wines of the region and give them their broad spectrum of aromas: spicy to mineral, incomparable and with a crystal-clear character. The Manhartsberg in the north contains the Gföhler gneiss, the primary rock. Further south, the Danube gravel forms the subsoil. Above the stony layers lie brown earth and loess, which is loved by wine, as well as loam, which has formed on the banks of the Kamps. Formed over millions of years, these soils provide the vines with support, minerals and deep water reservoirs.
